چکیده

Networked virtual environments (NVEs) such as Massively Multiplayer Online Games (MMOGs) have become very popular in recent years. However, existing client-server architectures suffer from resource constrains when the number of concurrent users increases. Research on peer-to-peer networked virtual environments (P2P NVEs) thus tries to find more scalable and affordable methods via the resource sharing of mutually cooperating clients. However, P2P approaches face the problem of misbehavior by clients that do not process game rules properly. Without server monitoring, the misbehavior could challenge the proper execution of game rules and affect a game’s normal operations. In this paper, we present REPS, a distributed reputation management system for P2P-based MMOGs that allows trustworthy clients be identified and selected to perform important tasks. The first part of REPS deals with the generation, storage, and query for peer rating or game statistics (i.e., reputation factors) that could be the basis for user trustworthiness estimation. The second part of REPS deals with how to find trustworthy users by considering the weighted impacts of each factors. We propose TuS (Trustworthy user Selection) to adjust the weights of each factors so that the more important factors would weigh more. Based on the mutual rating among users and reputation queries, REPS provides a scalable and reliable reputation mechanism that facilitates decision making from choosing trustworthy superpeers, to deciding whether to interact with

Scalable Reputation Management for P2P MMOGs

Networked virtual environments (VEs) such as Massively Multiplayer Online Games (MMOGs) have become very popular in recent years. However, existing client-server architectures suffer from resource constrains when the number of concurrent users increases. Research on peer-to-peer virtual environments (P2P-VEs) thus tries to create more scalable and affordable VEs via the resource sharing of mutu...

GGRA: a grouped gossip-based reputation aggregation algorithm

An important issue in P2P networks is the existence of malicious nodes that decreases the performance of such networks. Reputation system in which nodes are ranked based on their behavior, is one of the proposed solutions to detect and isolate malicious (low ranked) nodes. Gossip Trust is an interesting previously proposed algorithm for reputation aggregation in P2P networks based on t...

Towards Formalizing a Reputation System for Cheating Detection in Peer-to-Peer-Based Massively Multiplayer Online Games

The rapidly growing popularity of Massively Multiplayer Online Games (MMOGs) has given rise to an increase in the number of players world wide. MMOGs enable many players interact together through a shared sense of presence created by the game. The Peer-to-Peer (P2P) network topology overcomes communication bottleneck problems associated with centralized client/server systems. Thus, P2P-based MM...

Voronoi State Management for P2P MMOGs

State management is a basic requirement for multi-user virtual environments (VEs) such as Massively Multiplayer Online Games (MMOGs). Current MMOGs rely on centralized server-clusters that possess inherent scalability bottlenecks and are expensive to adopt and deploy. In this concept paper, we propose Voronoi State Management (VSM) to maintain object states for peer-to-peer-based virtual worlds...

Multiplayer Games and their Need for Scalable and Secure State Management

In recent years, massively multiplayer online games (MMOGs) have become very popular by providing more entertainment, therefore millions of players now participate may interact with each other in a shared environment, even though these players may be separated by huge geographic distances. Peer to Peer (P2P) architectures become very popular in MMOG recently, due to their distributed and collab...
